LKIT:s arbete är tvärvetenskapligt och involverar personer med bakgrund inom bland annat lingvistik, pedagogik, informatik, datavetenskap, media och kommunikationsvetenskap samt tillämpad IT. Avdelningen ger magisterprogrammet "Lärande, kommunikation och IT", ett antal fristående kurser och är delaktiga i flera andra utbildningar vid Göteborgs universitet samt flera universitetsgemensamma, nationella och internationella forskningssamarbeten och nätverk.
