Doctoral student at the Department

Once you are admitted you will be affiliated to a research group at the department. You will be introduced to national and international research communities. You will get access to cross-disciplinary cooperation with researchers in other disciplines, as well as contacts with companies and organizations. The aim is to provide good conditions for a continued career inside as well as outside the academy.

As a PhD student, you are entitled to continuous supervision for support and advice during your doctoral studies. You have a principal supervisor and at least one assistant supervisor. A doctoral examiner is also appointed.

Your doctoral education consists of courses and your own research work that will result in a licentiate dissertation / doctoral dissertation. The subject of the work is chosen in consultation with the supervisor in connection with admission. It is important that you keep your individual study plan updated, in consultation with your supervisors, so it will display your progression.

You will be trained to execute active research work and to publish your research in scientific outlets. You are encouraged to participate in national and international conferences and research collaborations. Through participation in seminars, conferences and scientific discussions, you develop your ability to acquire knowledge, develop ideas and defend them, as well as to write, critically review and publish scientific texts.

You will present your research at a higher seminar at the beginning, middle and end of your doctoral studies. If you are going to complete a licentiate degree, you will present your research results at a higher seminar at the start of the research studies. At these seminars, you will receive comments and feedback aimed at supporting you in the dissertation work, and preparing for the defence of your dissertation.

You are expected to attend seminars and guest lectures, although they might not be directly related to your own research work, and you are also expected to contribute to the institution's joint activities. You are responsible for registering for the mandatory introduction for doctoral students and new employees at the University of Gothenburg.
