Global Swede Award to student at Applied IT

Olena Zakharian, master student at the Department of Applied IT received the distinguished Global Swede Award 2019. The award is to honoring international students who excel in areas closely related to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Olena Zakharian is studying Master in Communication and received the award together with other nominated students from Swedish universities, in all they were 26 international students. The event took place at Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs on the 21st of May.

– It was really nice and non-competitive. The award helps to create a network of students and scholars to contribute to achieving sustainability goals as well as to developing the trade and international relationships of Sweden and our home countries, so I think it's really great, says Olena.

Other criterias for the Global Swede award is to be an active, committed and enthusiastic student who can show that they are good representatives of their own country as well as Sweden. Olena Zakharian is from Ukraine and got a special visit from the ambassador.

– The Ambassador of Ukraine also came to the ceremony, we had a chance to talk, and then there was a lovely lunch mingle for all the nominees, their guests, universities' and Swedish Institute representatives, ambassadors. Afterward, we went to Tekniska Museet together. It was a great day, and I am so happy and grateful to the faculty for nominating me.

Olena represented University of Gothenburg and will hereafter be part of the alumni network of the Swedish Institute, which today has about 15 000 people from 140 different countries.

Olena does not only excel in her studies by producing high quality and original work, but also continuously encourages and connects fellow students in an intercultural learning environment. Handling marketing and communication responsibilities at the start-up Checheza, she engages in developing mobile apps with a focus on literacy and numeracy for children in East Africa. As an intern at Ericsson, Olena contributes to advancing Sustainable Development Goals through technological innovation.
