Using social media - Unpacking evolving social media practices

Research profile seminar

Beata Jungselius final seminar. Beata is PhD-student in Applied Information Technology at the Department of Applied Information Technology, University of Gothenburg.

Social media has changed how people interact. Mobile technologies and social media have offered new possibilities for people to document and share their everyday life and to many, these new communication technologies and what they enable are considered being an important part of peoples social life. The aim of this thesis is to describe how people use social media and to provide new insights on social media practices, by presenting empirical findings from four papers. I ask, what is social media use? and describe social practices that people engage in when producing, sharing and interacting around content in social media. Drawing upon two main studies, conducted in 2012 and 2017, consisting of both online and offline data, I provide insights on the skills needed to be considered a competent user of social media. By returning to the same informants five years later, I have been able to compare data and discuss evolvement in social media use over time. Based on this data and in relation to previous research, the most prominent influencing factors that have had an impact on social media use over time are outlined: changes in life and time management, changes in technical capabilities, changes in privacy preferences and changes in modes of engagement. Despite changes, the informants additionally described having a similar approach to social media use in general.
