Gamification in mobile health design

Research profile seminar

As medicine advances and people¿s life expectancy increases, more and more conditions are now considered to be chronic instead of fatal.

Patients of all ages face challenges in managing their health conditions, as they often need to follow tedious routines, perform dull exercises, or regularly take medications which may cause side-effects that influence their personal, working, and social life. These obstacles might act as demotivators for people especially if stopping the medication or healthy routines is not followed by immediate health deterioration. How do we motivate patients to continuously work on sustaining their health?

Lecturer: Guido Giunti MD Ph.D. is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie alumni and entrepreneur specialized in digital health solutions. He holds a PhD in the field of Information Processing Science and his thesis was on the use of persuasive technologies and gamification to promote healthy behaviors in patients with chronic conditions. His scientific work has received awards and media attention from all over the world. He was a speaker on multiple international conferences and seminars on Healthcare IT and has taught Internal Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and at NuVu Studio (an innovative education institute related to MIT, USA). Currently, he is working as a post-doctoral researcher on eHealth at the University of Oulu in Finland and he is an editor of the Serious Games Journal of Medical Internet Research.
